Hm - beeing in recent Postfix/Cyrus environments I just came across:
(quite long thread regarding 'message contains nul characters')

to properly configure the Postfix MTA wrt:

  disable_mime_output_conversion
  strict_8bitmime_body

... if anyone cares to test where it previously failed with such errormessages.
