I would create some kind of default. An EOQualifier default which  
restricts the projects which show up in 'other' places.
Eg:
   "kind = nil OR name LIKE 'Show up*'"

Don't know how much work that is (how many components access the  
kind). I don't think its very important.

Well, yes, those are set by custom applications currently. But a set  
kind does not necessarily imply that the project must not show up.
