You may end up with Donald's, Daisy's, Mickey's and Pluto's names floating around the database turning name searches very awkward. Consider not installing the Palm application unless you can have a strong control on their use.... This is very true of mobile devices no matter how you can connect them (or I imagine, what you connect them too). If anyone has any flashes of insight I'd love to hear them; but probably over on Discuss@" I'm a heavy user of mobile devices, having gone through 6 Palm device upgrades since 1998. I use Chapura's Pocket Mirror Pro to sync my Treo 650 with Outlook/Exchange at my day job. PM Pro has several nice features that make it easy to keep personal stuff personal. The first is category exclusion. You indicate in the conduit which categories you DON'T want to sync (handheld only or desktop only) and items in those categories will stay where they are. The second is private items exclusion. Items marked private will remain on the platform they were created on, and will not be synched to the other. Here's how PM Pro works syncing with Outlook. There are two types of sync types in HotSync: slow and fast. Slow sync is the comprehensive one. It happens for first-time syncs, or if there was a problem with the last fast sync attempt, or when you are syncing for the first time at a different PC (ie, you sync at home and at work; slow sync will occur at each PC for the first sync after syncing with the other box, subsequent will be fast syncs until you go to the other place). The sync process is a five step one for each conduit: 1. Outlook is scanned for all records and an index is built (first-time sync) or updated. 2. The handheld is scanned for all records, and an index is also built or updated. 3. The most important step!! This is where the two are compared for matches and differences. Matches are linked together, and differences are flagged for action. The action depends on: a) whether an item is new, and on which platform it was created b) whether an item is modified, and on which platform (or both). In this case the action could be Outlook wins, or Handheld wins, or the record is duplicated on both platforms, an error is generated, and the user has to figure it out. c) whether an item has been deleted, and if the backup/archive flag has been set d) whether or not there is a category exclusion e) whether or not there is a private items exclusion 4. Changes from the handheld are synced over to Outlook (based on the previous possible actions) 5. Changes from Outlook are synched back to the handheld. A fast sync uses the same process and logic, except that the databases are scanned for records with a "dirty" or modified flag, and that is used to determine what needs to be synched. The fact that OGo has a native nhsd (Network HotSync Daemon) makes it a powerful mobilizing tool for small businesses, ones that want portability but don't need OTA (Over The Air) or SyncML services. The only things holding it back are: a) No support for the current Palm Enhanced PIM databases (to which I've logged some informational notes into a bugzilla bug), and once that's addressed, a relinking to pilot-link 0.12.x b) The ability to sync (or not sync) Palm categories against specific views of OGo data to which the user has appropriate permissions. For examples: Calendar Sync Palm calendar category "Boss" to my bosses' OGo public calendar Sync Palm category "Team" against a team public calendar to which I'm a member Exclude Palm category "personal" Tasks Sync Palm category "Boss to Call" against tasks owned by my boss which have the category "Calls" assigned Sync Palm category "Team" against a team public tasks folder to which I have permissions etc, etc,... Hope this helps! /Mike From discuss@opengroupware.org Sat May 5 20:33:02 2007 From: discuss@opengroupware.org (Edward Baer) Date: Sat, 05 May 2007 14:33:02 -0500 Subject: [OGo-Discuss] Evolution 2.8 Calendar and Exchange issues. Message-ID: <1178393582.13307.7.camel@localhost.localdomain> Help, I am trying to convert to using Evolution 2.8 to replace my Outlook Email and Calendar readers. When I originally setup Evolution on my CentOS 5.0 system, I was able to see the mail on the Exhange server and the Events in the Calendar. But when I moved messages around in Evolution and then exited, when I got back the messages had not moved. I set the synch local option on and now the messages stay moved, but it looks like they are all coming local instead of staying on the server. Is this the only way to keep the Outlook and Evolution sync'd? Next, when I originally setup, I could see the Calendar appointments on the Exchange server, but after exiting and the coming back in, now every time I select the the calendar, it looks like it is trying to connect on the status bar, but it never retrieves anything and then it unselects that calendar. Where can I find the correct configuration documentation for Evolution 2.8? Thanks in advance, I am going crazy. ewb From discuss@opengroupware.org Sun May 6 02:05:47 2007 From: discuss@opengroupware.org (Adam Tauno Williams) Date: Sat, 5 May 2007 21:05:47 -0400 Subject: [OGo-Discuss] Evolution 2.8 Calendar and Exchange issues. Possibly a mis-understanding? I am converting from a workstation using Windows 2000 and Outlook 2003 to a workstation using CentOS 5.0 and Evolution 2.8. My problems are related to getting Evolution Mail, Calendar, and Contacts to talk to the 2003 Exchange server reliably. It seems like I can get visible Messages, and Appointments, and no Contacts. But,changes made to the Email messages, like moving them to different folders are lost when Evolution is exited. Same is true for new or modified Appointments. The only setting I could find was to synchronize folders locally, which in turn copied all of the email to my local hard drive. Then the changes made in Evolution are retained, (at least locally), but I don't want the data copied locally. I want it to operate like Exchange or IMAP, where all of the data is stored and retained on the server. Also, in the previous version of Evolution 2.6 (I think), I was able to get the Calendar function to accept changes, but the notifications never seemed to work. Is there a forum or well documented area for how to properly set these up, and how to debug when it does not work? For instance a better explanation and examples of what an OWA URL, or Global Catalog server name. Anyway, the main problem is that it keeps hanging for an extended length of time while trying synchronize the folders. If the password is memorized, it looks like the program is not coming up at all. Thanks for your help in advance. ewb On Sat, 2007-05-05 at 21:05 -0400, Adam Tauno Williams wrote: > > I am trying to convert to using Evolution 2.8 to replace my Outlook > > Email and Calendar readers. > > So you are migrating your M$-Exchange server to OpenGroupware? You are wrong in this mailing list which is about the OpenGroupware.org server. If you have Evolution questions, join the Evolution mailing list: http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list Thanks, Helge -- Helge Hess http://www.helgehess.eu/ From discuss@opengroupware.org Sun May 6 13:45:52 2007 From: discuss@opengroupware.org (Adam Tauno Williams) Date: Sun, 06 May 2007 08:45:52 -0400 Subject: [OGo-Discuss] Evolution 2.8 Calendar and Exchange issues. This is a list for discussion about OpenGroupware; the OpenGroupware.Org groupware server - http://www.opengroupware.org OpenGroupware is a competitor/replacement for M$-Exchange/M$-Sharepoint. Since you are not using OpenGroupware.... this list isn't going to be very helpful. Perhaps you should try some of the resources specifically for the Novell Evolution - http://www.go-evolution.org/Main_Page http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list > It seems like I can get visible Messages, and Appointments, and no > Contacts.
