To Outlook the OGo server looks almost exactly like an Exchange server, so it should be able to provide it's UM capabilities with ZideLook+OGo as well. But people need to try out. best regards, Helge PS: unfortunately we have no ZideLook test packages yet. We are looking into this issue as people seem to be very interested in this. Stay tuned. Of course, I meant "Outlook as a ZideStore client". Supporting user-defined attributes in ZideStore *in conjunction with Outlook* is hard (this is special to Outlook, OGo itself has support for custom attributes on almost any object). I guess Outlook custom attributes are mapped to MAPI property tags. Now if Outlook always maps to a specific range of property tags, things should be a lot easier. The problem is, that Outlook sends 100 property tags and we just grep out the ones we think are interesting. So we can't just use "all the remaining tags" as custom properties but rather must identify tags as being custom. regards, Helge -- http://www.opengroupware.org/ From mark@houseoffish.org Mon Aug 11 16:06:02 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: outlook@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id 8528B18F708 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 2003 16:06:02 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 32426-10 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 2003 16:06:01 +0200 (CEST) Received: from oversoul.34sp.com (oversoul.34sp.com [212.187.158.83]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with SMTP id 8F00F18F6F1 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 2003 16:06:01 +0200 (CEST) Received: (qmail 14454 invoked by uid 2525); 11 Aug 2003 14:08:06 -0000 Received: from 212.126.148.10 ( [212.126.148.10]) as user mark@localhost by webmail.houseoffish.org with HTTP; Mon, 11 Aug 2003 15:08:06 +0100 Message-ID: <1060610886.3f37a3462a172@webmail.houseoffish.org> Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 15:08:06 +0100 From: mark@houseoffish.org To: outlook@opengroupware.org Subject: Re: [OGo-Outlook] Some Questions References: <3F37672C.2030608@opengroupware.org> In-Reply-To: <3F37672C.2030608@opengroupware.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.1 X-Originating-IP: 212.126.148.10 X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030314-p2 (Debian) at opengroupware.org Sender: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org Errors-To: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org X-BeenThere: outlook@opengroupware.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: outlook@opengroupware.org List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: ZideLook MAPI Storage Provided related discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Quoting Helge Hess : > Nat! wrote: > > Am Sonntag, 10.08.03 um 18:02 Uhr schrieb Helge Hess: > >> > And would ZideLook as well as ZideStore need extension? So we can't just use "all the > remaining tags" as custom properties but rather must identify tags as > being custom. > Right, here is how custom fields work (info gained using OutlookSpy again), this example is for contacts, I don't think custom fields are supported elsewhere 1) The custom field structure is stored in a IMAPIMessage of class IPC.MICROSOFT.REN.USERFIELDS which is associated (how?) with the IMAPIFolder Contacts. The important info is stored in the property tag PR_USERFIELDS in type PT_BINARY 2) When data is provided into some of the fields, Property tag 0x8086 is filled with the same structure as is in PR_USERFIELDS of the IPC.MICROSOFT.REN.USERFIELDS table, but only for the fields which have been populated 3) The actual data is stored in property tags from 0x80D3 upwards as PT_STRING8, PT_DOUBLE, PT_SYSTIME, or PT_BOOLEAN. This is GUID {00020329-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}, kind MNID_STRING and ID is Text Field, Number Field, Duration Field, Percent Field etc. I hope this all makes sense. The most difficult thing is going to be that IPC.MICROSOFT.REN.USERFIELDS I would have thought - ie where to store it in OGo? Well, custom attributes should be stored custom attributes ;-) OGo supports extended attributes (so called company_value's) on all contact records. ZideLook is a so called "MAPI Storage Provider" which is the pluggable API the Outlook UI uses to write and read data. Eg the "personal folders" are also implemented as a MAPI SP - just like ZideLook. > Would it not be better to create a MAPI emulator on the server? Yes, that would be much better! But this requires very, very hard protocol level reverse engineering - comparable to what Samba has done for file sharing, only about twice as difficult. I would estimate at least a year work of a dedicated and very TCP/IP and Exchange knowledged person to reach that goal. Very hard (and expensive). Well: actually you would still need the Exchange MAPI plugin! Outlook itself only speaks the "local" MAPI API. The Exchange MAPI provider translates the local MAPI calls into network MAPI calls. Maybe that makes it clear: Exchange: OpenGroupware.org/SKYRiX /--------------------\ /--------------\ | Outlook | | Outlook | Client |--------------------| |--------------| |----\ MAPI API /----| |-\ MAPI API /-| API |--------------------| |--------------| | Exchange Connector | | ZideLook | Connector |--------------------| |--------------| |--\ Network MAPI /--| |--\ WebDAV /--| Network Transport |--------------------| |--------------| | Exchange Server | | ZideStore | Server \--------------------/ \--------------/ So the MAPI API is converted into "Network" MAPI by the local Exchange connector. Now the Exchange connector is AFAIK included with any Outlook package (which makes deployment easier), but I'm not sure about the licensing of the connector (could well be that the licensing is bound to an actual Exchange account license). > With this > approach Outlook will not know if it is talking to Exchange or even > better > OpenGroupware. Correct. But its too much work. Even writing a MAPI Storage Provider is a lot of hard work which is why very few non-Exchange solutions provide Outlook integration. So even though OGo doesn't provide Outlook integration for free, it is outstanding in the Linux groupware market by providing a real MAPI SP at all! BTW: The fact that ZideLook uses WebDAV as a MAPI transport opens a *lot* of possibilities. You can feed virtually any information into Outlook based on that technology in an "open" way. regards, Helge From helge.hess@opengroupware.org Sat Sep 6 19:33:20 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: outlook@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id BC93E18F6F8 for ; Sat, 6 Sep 2003 19:33:18 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 04695-09 for ; Sat, 6 Sep 2003 19:33:17 +0200 (CEST) Received: from creutzfeld.z.net (ip180.169.1211H-CUD12K-03.ish.de [62.143.169.180]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with SMTP id C325B18F6F7 for ; Sat, 6 Sep 2003 19:32:56 +0200 (CEST) Received: (qmail 30156 invoked from network); 6 Sep 2003 17:32:56 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ?192.168.1.233?) Most often the OS "force" as a community is best in working/improving on an existing base, not in doing something from scratch. To get started some one to three persons working fulltime to get things started are probably *very* helpful. > So, I got to > thinking again (as dangerous as that may be) that perhaps the world > needs an > OpenMAPI project. Well, as I brought up several times now, the replacement would need to look as much as Outlook as possible to be successful. Like Outlook 2003 looks different to Outlook 2000, not much more. Often such a OpenSource project starts out with an attempt to do "better" which results in the point you brought up - users do not accept it. IMHO the correct way is first to do everything Outlook does, gain the marketshare due to better pricing and then improve on that. But enough talk about theory, I won't write that Windows client anyway ;-) regards, Helge -- OpenGroupware.org => http://www.opengroupware.org/ From oliver.jehle@monex.li Mon Sep 8 13:59:34 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: outlook@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id EBF4118F71B; Mon, 8 Sep 2003 13:59:33 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 27195-10; Mon, 8 Sep 2003 13:59:32 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail1.monex.li (unknown [80.66.229.195]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id 1A60F18F71A; Mon, 8 Sep 2003 13:59:32 +0200 (CEST) From: Oliver Jehle To: developer@opengroupware.org Cc: outlook@opengroupware.org In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <1063022406.1691.7.camel@vorab> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.4 Date: Mon, 08 Sep 2003 14:00:06 +0200 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030314-p2 (Debian) at opengroupware.org Subject: [OGo-Outlook] Re: [OGo-Developer] Outlook integration Sender: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org Errors-To: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org X-BeenThere: outlook@opengroupware.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: outlook@opengroupware.org List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: ZideLook MAPI Storage Provided related discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: have a look on http://sourceforge.net/projects/otlkcon/ looks they also try to do something in the direction of mapi and outlook.. Hm, what do you mean "another". The only open source MAPI storage provider I know is OTLKCon and its seems far from being finished. > http://www.exchange4linux.org Also take a look at: http://www.opengroupware.org/en/related/index.html ;-) ---snip--- Exchange4Linux is another OpenSource groupware server. Unfortunately it only seems to work in conjunction with a propritary Outlook plugin and provides no other user interfaces. Exchange4Linux could use OGo technologies to provide a nice Web interface to the Exchange4Linux server. ---snap--- Indeed I was contacted by N&H (the company behind e4l) whether we are interested in cooperation - they said that they have found a nice way to integrate their plugin with OGo. But I got no response so far (since about four weeks) what exactly they are thinking about. Hm. > the server is open source, the outlook client plugin and any other > software for windows is closed. Correct. > anybody have any experience with their plugin or their overall > solution? Well, I have no "experience" per se with that, but I had a look into e4l before we decide to go the ZideLook way (mostly because N&H had no interest in working with SKYRIX back then). They are basically doing MAPI-over-CORBA where ZideLook does MAPI-over-WebDAV. The e4l server is written in Python and basically just a storage backend to MAPI. At least until recently e4l had *serious* scalability problems (using a single PostgreSQL table to store all MAPI properties as individual rows). AFAIK they are working to resolve this. From a technical point of view the solution is very much like Exchange or Kolab - a "dumb" storage server and all functionality in the client. OGo has a functionally rich server and can also work easily with "dumb" clients ;-) Eg something like "search for conflicting appointments" is a server side function in OGo. Greets, Helge PS: in the last German iX magazine there was a comparison off the various available Linux groupware solutions which allow Outlook frontends, including OGo/SKYRiX and e4l. -- OpenGroupware.org http://www.opengroupware.org/ From ogo@toasterz.com Fri Sep 12 21:46:28 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: outlook@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id E01DC18F808 for ; Fri, 12 Sep 2003 21:46:27 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 04753-04 for ; Fri, 12 Sep 2003 21:46:27 +0200 (CEST) Received: from fed1mtao07.cox.net (fed1mtao07.cox.net [68.6.19.124]) by mail.opengroupware.org (mail) with ESMTP id 3397A18F7A8 for ; Fri, 12 Sep 2003 21:46:26 +0200 (CEST) Received: from toasterz.com ([68.0.151.150]) by fed1mtao07.cox.net (InterMail vM.5.01.06.05 201-253-122-130-105-20030824) with ESMTP id <20030912194619.ONZS13988.fed1mtao07.cox.net@toasterz.com> for ; Fri, 12 Sep 2003 15:46:19 -0400 Message-ID: <3F62225C.4000708@toasterz.com> Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 12:45:32 -0700 From: Kelley G User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: outlook@opengroupware.org Subject: Re: [OGo-Outlook] exchange4linux References: <1063022406.1691.7.camel@vorab> <3F61E58D.1000503@toasterz.com> <5F533570-E552-11D7-BD8A-000393C29C2A@opengroupware.org> In-Reply-To: <5F533570-E552-11D7-BD8A-000393C29C2A@opengroupware.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030314-p2 (Debian) at opengroupware.org Sender: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org Errors-To: outlook-admin@opengroupware.org X-BeenThere: outlook@opengroupware.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: outlook@opengroupware.org List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: ZideLook MAPI Storage Provided related discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Helge Hess wrote: > On 12.09.2003, at 17:26, Kelley G wrote: > >> here's another open source mapi storage provider, with, it seems a >> plugin available in the states. > > > Hm, what do you mean "another".
