I haven't had any problems compiling under Ubunty Gutsy (7.10) Server.
Etch should be +/- compatible with Ubuntu.

Whenever you do something, the GNUsteps.sh should be sourced, especially
before running ./configure:
$ . /usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh

Make also sure gnustep-base-{common,runtime} is installed. Do NOT use
libfoundation1.0 or libobjc-lf2. Uninstall them if they are installed.

You should run ./configure with the following parameters:
$ ./configure --with-gnustep --gsmake=$GNUSTEP_MAKEFILES --enable-strip --disable-debug
$ make
$ sudo make install

SOPE has to be compiled and installed before building SOGo
(same ./configure line for each)

Regards
Erny
