Shortly I will get back with technical instructions on how to translate OGo and how to translate the website. I think we can workaround the problems by using ISO-Latin-1 HTML files and by encoding any Non-Latin-1 chars using entities (eg ≻ or ä). We'll see. If we have the Western languages translated, German, Spanish, French, Italien etc, we are a whole lot further in any case. For Japanese, Chinese etc you should probably use UTF-8 and we'll see whether we can get it processed using OGo Publisher templates. I think we should be able to work that out. Anyway, now instructions to get started translating the website. All the pages are currently in CVS, you can checkout the webserver using: $ export CVSROOT=":pserver:anonymous@cvs.opengroupware.org:/cvs" $ cvs login # (just press enter for the password) $ cvs -z3 -q checkout www The CMS uses templates to assemble web pages using individual parts. We already prepared the www tree to contain different languages in different subdirectories, more exactly in "en" (English), "de" (German), "fr" (French), "es" (Spain). We'll need to add additional codes for additional languages. So how should you translate ? Well, for the initial translation you should just copy everything from the "en" tree to your language, eg: $ cd en $ cp -ra * ../es/ $ cd ../es/ $ rm -rf `find . -name CVS` then start translation ;-) If you have some initial version ready, you should send me a tar of the language directory and I'll check it into CVS. Since the website is still in flux, it's actually some work to keep track of changes. We should probably write some script which can be run from the language subdirectory and which shows files that changed in the en tree based on the file modification date. Probably not too difficult (any contributor ? ;-). Let me know in the list if you need further help and I'll step in. best regards, Helge -- http://www.opengroupware.org/ From dan@ohnesorg.cz Mon Jul 14 23:36:06 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: translation@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4CA0218F64C for ; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:36:06 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 06895-02 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:36:05 +0200 (CEST) Received: from poli.feld.cvut.cz (k315.feld.cvut.cz [147.32.193.234]) by mail.opengroupware.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 88BC418F539 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:36:02 +0200 (CEST) Received: from dan.ohnesorg.cz (gprs3-185.eurotel.cz [160.218.146.185]) by poli.feld.cvut.cz (Postfix) with ESMTP id E23591FC0AA for ; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:37:44 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from dan@localhost) by dan.ohnesorg.cz (8.11.6/8.11.6) id h6ELcsH14802 for translation@opengroupware.org; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:38:54 +0200 Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2003 23:38:54 +0200 From: Dan Ohnesorg To: translation@opengroupware.org Subject: Re: [OGo-Translation] Translating the WebSite Message-ID: <20030714213854.GK1606@ohnesorg.cz> References: <3F1300A5.6040905@opengroupware.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <3F1300A5.6040905@opengroupware.org> X-Mailer: Mutt http://www.mutt.org/ X-Accept-Language: cs en de User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.3i X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030314-p2 (Debian) at opengroupware.org Sender: translation-admin@opengroupware.org Errors-To: translation-admin@opengroupware.org X-BeenThere: translation@opengroupware.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: Translating OpenGroupware.org List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Dne Mon, Jul 14, 2003 at 09:12:37PM +0200, Helge Hess napsal: > I think we can workaround the problems by using ISO-Latin-1 HTML files > and by encoding any Non-Latin-1 chars using entities (eg ≻ or ä). > We'll see. No, this won't work out. The problem is, that the pages are processed by the CMS, which is 8-bit, ISO-Latin-1. But of course you could also translate the files exported by the CMS, but this properly isn't a very good idea (makes keeping things consistent so much more difficult). >> For Japanese, Chinese etc you should probably use UTF-8 and we'll see >> whether we can get it processed using OGo Publisher templates. You can, like Japanese, Chinese, prepare things in UTF-8, but I can't promise when we will be ready for processing those - hopefully in the next three months. > For Czech is it cs (top domain is .cz, but language is cs). OGo currently only works out of the box with ISO-Latin-1/15 (except for the mailer). A result of code being written by a German company for the Germany market, sigh. Now the good news: the OGo API uses Unicode almost everywhere, so there is high chance that the issue will be resolved quite quickly. So that "issue" classifies translations into three, general categories: a) 8-Bit, ISO-Latin-1/15 - French, German, English, Spanish, Portugese, .. ? b) 8-Bit Encoding - it *might* be easy to switch the standard 8-bit encoding of libFoundation from ISO-Latin-1 to something else (eg ISO-Latin-2) - Czech, Russion, Korean, Turkish ? c) Unicode - to get Unicode working all over OGo we need - either to port OGo from libFoundation to gstep-base, which has full Unicode suport - or extend libFoundation to fully support Unicode - then we need to check all the code whether everything is working - Japanese, Chinese Now another bad thing, I can't really help on any of this (no time for that). We already got someone from the GNUstep project which is interested in porting OGo to gstep-base (AFAIK a Chinese developer), so chances are very good that we are rapidly improving on b) and c) soon. OK. All this doesn't need to stop people from starting to localize (ISO-Latin-1/15 guys in no case ;-). The most important thing to localize (and almost the only one except for very few images) are the so called ".strings" files. Those files define a mapping from a key used in the HTML template to the actual label which is rendered. The strings files are located in WebUI/Resources in the source tree which you can get as a .bz2 from the website. Inside the Resources directory you already find two language projects: English.lproj and German.lproj If you want to localize, just add one, eg: Spanish.lproj After that you should simply copy all the strings file from the English.lproj: cp English.lproj/*.strings Spanish.lproj/ and you can start translation of each file ;-) They contain mappings like: Monday = "Monday" eg for German you would change that to: Monday = "Montag" So, that's it. If everything is translated, send me the new .lproj ;-) To try out any changes, you need to add your language to the "SkyLanguages" default. Eg: $ Defaults write OpenGroupware SkyLanguages \ '(English,French,Spanish,German,Czech)' Thanks a LOT for your help, Helge -- __________________________________________________________________ Helge Hess Email: helge.hess@skyrix.com SKYRIX Software AG Tel: +49-391-6623-0 Universitaetsplatz 12 Fax: +49-391-6623-599 39104 Magdeburg, Germany Internet: http://www.skyrix.com __________________________________________________________________ Exchange your Exchange http://developer.skyrix.com/ __________________________________________________________________ From gorkem@gelecek.com.tr Tue Jul 15 11:13:48 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: translation@opengroupware.org Received: from localhost (mail.opengroupware.org [213.211.192.141]) by mail.opengroupware.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 519C418F51B for ; Tue, 15 Jul 2003 11:13:48 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mail.opengroupware.org ([213.211.192.141]) by localhost (mail [213.211.192.141]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 12365-05 for ; Tue, 15 Jul 2003 11:13:47 +0200 (CEST) Received: from gaga.gelecek.com.tr (unknown [213.194.110.103]) by mail.opengroupware.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 9790018F40A for ; Tue, 15 Jul 2003 11:13:40 +0200 (CEST) Received: (qmail 7480 invoked by uid 509); 14 Jul 2003 09:37:41 -0000 Received: from localhost (sendmail-bs@127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 14 Jul 2003 09:37:41 -0000 Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2003 12:37:41 +0300 (EEST) From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?G=F6rkem_=C7etin?= X-X-Sender: gorkem@localhost.localdomain To: translation@opengroupware.org Subject: Re: [OGo-Translation] Translating the OGo Application In-Reply-To: <3F12FCBD.6000905@skyrix.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8BIT X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030314-p2 (Debian) at opengroupware.org Sender: translation-admin@opengroupware.org Errors-To: translation-admin@opengroupware.org X-BeenThere: translation@opengroupware.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: translation@opengroupware.org List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: Translating OpenGroupware.org List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: On Mon, 14 Jul 2003, Helge Hess wrote: > is high chance that the issue will be resolved quite quickly. > > So that "issue" classifies translations into three, general categories: > > a) 8-Bit, ISO-Latin-1/15 > - French, German, English, Spanish, Portugese, .. ? > > b) 8-Bit Encoding > - it *might* be easy to switch the standard 8-bit encoding of > libFoundation from ISO-Latin-1 to something else (eg ISO-Latin-2) > - Czech, Russion, Korean, Turkish ? After translation, .po files can be converted into language files back. We use this in Czech localization of OpenOfiice.org with great success. Hard to imagine something simpler ;-) Yes, its simple, but GNU gettext is whole system ready for localizing many applications. It is used widely in KDE, GNOME, all the GNU utils (ls, cp, mv, grep...). Its used in mailman, modlogan... where you need the posibility to switch language per process or on the fly, you need gettext. Its very simple for developer, he needs only prefix any localizable string with _ ... printf(_("my string")). Theh are all the stings automatically extracted into .po files. They are looking like this: # SOME DESCRIPTIVE TITLE. # Copyright (C) 1999 Free Software Foundation, Inc. # Dan Ohnesorg , 1999. # msgid "" msgstr "" "Project-Id-Version: 1.0rc3\n" "POT-Creation-Date: Fri May 2 00:59:38 2003\n" "PO-Revision-Date: 2002-12-15 00:39+0100\n" "Last-Translator: Dan Ohnesorg \n" "Language-Team: Czech \n" "MIME-Version: 1.0\n" "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-2\n" "Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n" "X-Generator: KBabel 0.9.6\n" #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:112 msgid "size not available" msgstr "velikost není známa" #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:118 msgid " %(size)i bytes " msgstr " %(size)i bajtù " #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:249 Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:408 #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:969 Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:1134 msgid " at " msgstr " na " #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:437 msgid "Previous message:" msgstr "Pøedchozí pøíspìvek:" #: Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py:459 msgid "Next message:" msgstr "Následující pøíspìvek:" as you can see, msgid is original, msgstr is translated string. Comment show, where is the string used, if string is used many times, it needs be translated only once. The .po file is compiled into binary hash and the hash is than used in applicaiton. It is loaded dynamically, so any user can modifi it. Due compilation is checked, if translation is correct. If there are missing %s for substitution .. problem is reported. If there is new version of the .po file, using msgmerge can be merged existing translation with new template and then is needed to translate only missing strings. If system uses translation where aren't some strings, its no problem, they are only shown in original language. There are also some special features. For example we in Czech are using another word when we are speaking about one person, another i case of two persons and another for even more persons. Gettext can choose variant strings according some number in string, but it is not widely used now. You don't need whole gettext, You can use only .po files, while there is many suppport for simple translation of them.
