My name si Branislav Klocok and I am the leader of Slovak localization team of
OpenOffice.org.
My company (OFZ a.s., cca. 200 computers in the network, www.ofz.sk) has
decided to install groupware software in our network. We have took a look at
several projects and made a decision that OGo is something that would suit us
best.
Following this decision I thought it might be a good idea to have a Slovak
localization of OGo. I read the information on your web page concerning the
translation and I have few questions.
1. I would like to translate the the software first, because of apparent
reasons. I have installed OGo on my computer and took a look at .string
files.
I do not know what is the procedure but is there a possibility to ha a cvs
access to your server to a directory that would contain these files for
Slovak? Of course first there would be only English strings there and I would
translate them later on?
2. Is there a script converting .string files into .po files (and the other
way around) used by kde and OpenOffice? I have a large database of translated
stuff which I can use for the first automatic translation with kbabel. This
will decrease the time spent on the translation at least by 80% and wold
greatly help keeping further translations intact.
3. Slovak language uses iso-8859-2, but UTF-8 is also fine. Is this encoding
supported?

Here is a very simple .string-to-.po script I played around a while ago
with the same subject:

Invoke this script with the following command line
$OGo2po < AddressUI.string > AddressUI.po
where "AddressUI.string" is the string file to transform. Do it for all
the string files.
But... I had no time to write the .po-to-.string script... :-)
BTW: OGo translation is "zillion times" easier than OpenOffice (5K
strings)... I can tell you because I did contibuted to the pt-BR
OpenOffice translation (25K strings in a clumsy GSI file)...

But that script has one minor bug:

it leaves ; after " in msgid then kbabel treats is as Dear Ms."; not as Dea=

If I was a programmer I would correct the script my self but I am not......=

Oh, yes... these semicolons were added later in the string file because
it was a compatibility issue with MacOS. I did this script before that
(but never used it for the translation).
I'm no skilled script-writer as well... It was just for fun at that time.

we would love to see OGo in Slovak. But unfortunately this is currently
a no go because we only support ISO-Latin-1 completely, also see:

Full Unicode will probably be supported in OGo 1.2.

We are still working on the 1.0 release, so it will take a while for=20
1.2 ;-) Of course 1.1 versions might already provide full Unicode=20
support.

We (my company) need to make a decision about the groupware software now. I=

As usual with OpenSource software this depends on either
a) a contributor doing the work
b) a sponsor paying for the work
So no specific timeframe can be given.

OK. Actually there are several levels of language support. Eg=20
supporting UTF-8 template output is easier than supporting UTF-8 data=20
storage.

Great! We would happily accept contributions like that for inclusion in=20=
OGo.

It _can_ be corrected within weeks. Whether this is done is a matter of=20=
contributor time and interest or availability of a sponsor.
So we would definitely like to see that as a feature for 1.2 (we=20
consider that important), but we can't say yet when 1.2 will happen, I=20=
would _guess_ in 3-6 months.

OK this is good enough for me. So I will start translation as mentioned (in=

latin-1) and correct it later when ever OGo is ready for latin 2 or UTF-8.
Is there any official procedure to handle the translation (cvs .....) or I=

just translate the .string files copy it to appropriate directory in my OGo=

instalation?
