Hmmm... I assume the old database is encoded as LATIN1?

If you set PGDebugEnabled =3D YES in you defaults, restart OGo, and watch
the logs what is the last query that executes before the exception?  If
you perform that same query 'manually' in some other client
[ DbVisualizer - http://www.minq.se/products/dbvis/ - plug for my
favorite tool ] are there any weird characters in the results?

Can you export your old database, recode it, and import it into a UTF8
encoded database, and see what happens?
