As Adam mentions, the primary reason is speed. Storing everything in  
one location would be nice, but the drawbacks are quite significant  
(still, though the decision was made ~10 years ago ;-).

PS: BLOB portability is not that much a reason, AFAIK we support  
BLOBs for all database adaptors.
