Well, you asked for _read_ access:

This is working very well since about 2003 ... Just subscribe the
appropriate iCal resource and you are done.

OGo 1.1 is a good choice this this is always evolving.

Now you switch to modification of the server datastore. This is a
more difficult topic which was explained in detail in the past (just
check the archives). Most issues are due to the protocol and its not
recommended to use iCal-over-HTTP with modifications unless you very
well know what you are doing.
This will change once CalDAV support matures in the clients (and
OGo). MacOS 10.5 iCal.app features CalDAV and it works reasonably
well for me, with a few OGo "CalDAV" bugs pending.

If an event added in the WebUI doesn't show up, you are most likely
not subscribing the appropriate resource. This was explained plenty
of times in the past.

Don't know what you refer to here, but its important that all
contacts (and accounts!) have a proper email set when you use iCalendar.

Well, with Sunbird CalDAV works quite well for me. With one major bug
I wrote about a few weeks ago.
