Yes, this is covered in the authentication chapter of WMOGAG.  I have
live production installations of this currently.

It is certainly easier.  And creating a view takes all of 5 seconds.

The failure is almost certainly in PAM, so saslauthd isn't going to be
able to give you any useful error messages.
