The "news editors" team is a really a role;  members of the "news
editors" team can create/modify/delete news articles.  News is an
application in the WebUI that operates like a [very] primitive Wiki.

Have you tried adding "all intranet" with a role of non-participant
(info only)?  That seems to be exactly what you are looking for.  But I
haven't tested its effect on free/busy;  if it doesn't work you should
file a bug report.

Yep, this is one of the limitations of iCals multi-calendar approach,
it does kind of suck.
